Dating after divorce
There is no correct waiting period, despite everyone having an opinion about it. Some people are steady after six months; others are not ready after three years, and both are unremarkable.
What matters more than the calendar is what you are hoping the dating will do. This page is about telling those motives apart honestly, and about what the first attempts actually feel like, which is rarely what people expect.
AFTER offers emotional understanding, not medical, legal or financial advice.
Signs you are probably ready
You can go a day without narrating it to them
When good news stops being something you instinctively want to tell your ex — or to be seen by them — the attachment has loosened enough for someone new to actually be present.
You want company, not evidence
Dating to prove you are desirable, or to be found dating, tends to end badly. Wanting company for its own sake is a much steadier footing.
You can talk about the marriage in past tense
Not without feeling, but without it taking over the evening. If every conversation returns to it within ten minutes, you are still in the middle of something.
Your life has other things in it
When a date is one part of a week rather than the only thing in it, the stakes drop, and the whole experience gets more bearable.
Signs it might be too soon
None of these are moral failings. They usually just mean the timing will cost you more than it gives.
- You are hoping it will stop the loneliness rather than sit alongside it
- You still check their social media most days
- You want them to find out
- You cannot imagine telling anyone about your marriage without crying or raging
- You are hoping someone else will decide who you are now
- Your children have not yet adjusted to the separation itself
What the first attempts usually feel like
Most people describe the first few dates as strange rather than romantic: exposing, slightly comic, occasionally grief-inducing in ways they had not predicted.
Common experiences include feeling unfaithful, feeling ancient, being surprised by how much you enjoyed being asked questions, and going home relieved that it is over. A flat first date is not a verdict on your future. It is a first date.
Grief also has a habit of showing up afterwards rather than during. Plenty of people have a perfectly nice evening and cry in the car, because being briefly close to someone reminds them exactly what they lost.
Doing it without hurting yourself
- Tell the truth about where you are, early and briefly
- Keep the first meetings short and daytime if you can
- Do not use dating to fill every empty evening
- Notice if you are choosing people who are unavailable, and ask why
- Give yourself permission to stop for a few months without deciding anything
- Take the pressure off the outcome: practising being with people is the point at first
A quiet rule that saves a lot of pain: do not date to answer a question about your ex. Date to answer a question about your own life.
If you have children
The general pattern people find workable is to keep dating entirely separate from family life until a relationship is genuinely established — usually months rather than weeks. Children rarely mind a parent being happy; they mind a series of people appearing and disappearing.
Older children and teenagers often react more strongly than younger ones, and their reaction is usually about loyalty and change rather than the person. It tends to settle when they can see the separation itself has become stable.
Common questions
How long should you wait to date after divorce?
There is no evidence-based waiting period. Readiness is better judged by signs than by months: whether you want company rather than reassurance, whether you can talk about the marriage in past tense, and whether your life has other things in it. Some people are ready in months, others take years.
Is it normal to feel guilty dating after divorce?
Extremely. Many people describe feeling unfaithful on early dates, even years after the marriage ended. It usually reflects how long the loyalty was practised rather than anything you are doing wrong, and it tends to fade with repetition.
Should I tell dates I am divorced?
Yes, and generally early and briefly. Most people find that a short, unemotional version works far better than either hiding it or explaining the whole story on a first meeting.
When should my children meet someone new?
Most people find that waiting until the relationship is genuinely established — months, not weeks — causes the least disruption. What children tend to struggle with is a succession of new people, rather than the existence of a partner.
Why do I feel worse after a good date?
Closeness with someone new is one of the sharpest reminders of what you lost, so grief often arrives afterwards rather than during. It usually means the date went well, not that it was a mistake.
When to get more support
If the heaviness is constant rather than in waves, if you are managing it with alcohol, or if you cannot see a version of the future you want to be in, please speak to a doctor or a therapist. That is not an overreaction. If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency services.
